How do glaciers shape the land? Can you suggest how these landforms could have been formed by glaciers?

Objectives (for three lessons) All students must be able to name the main types of weathering and erosion associated with glaciated areas Most students should be able to explain the formation of two mountain landforms Some students could exemplify these landforms using The Andes

Glacier experiment Your teacher will take you outside and give you your own ‘glacier’ to explore Follow their instructions carefully and think about the questions they ask For more information about this experiment see http://www.museum.state.il.us/exhibits/midewin/geoactivity.html http://www.museum.state.il.us/exhibits/midewin/geoactivity.html

How do glaciers shape the land? Watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOGbOO aPHsw&feature=related to find out more about glacial erosion processes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOGbOO aPHsw&feature=related Draw a diagram in your book to show what is meant by plucking and abrasion

What landforms are created by glacial erosion? Look at examples of glacial landforms on pages 52-53 in the black text book Visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pChvcUMCKRc&feature=related to find out more about how different glacial landforms form http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pChvcUMCKRc&feature=related Produce an A4 poster showing how two erosional landforms form Can you give examples of these landforms from The Andes?

The southern Andes and its glaciers Santiago, Chile

The southern Andes near Santiago, Chile Glaciers clearly visible

Perito Moreno Glacier Patagonia Argentina

Glacier snout – note the meltwater (‘ablation’)

Icebergs which have ‘calved’ from the snout of a glacier: Cape York, Greenland

Accumulation here Ablation here

Two corries

Corrie once ice has melted

Aconcagua – a pyramidal peak

Reflection Go back to where the ice cubes were left. What has happened to them? What about the sand that was in them?

Homework Imagine that you are in charge of planning a trip to a The Andes. Where would you go? What famous landforms would you see there? Complete by ________
