Preliminaries Construct a concept web about triathlons and/or the Tour de France. The web must have at least 3 elements.

Objectives: The students will be able to engage in critical reading. The students will be able to write a letter. The students will be able to define the following words: transition, electrolytes, dehydrated, buoy, commitment, ranked, foundation and convinced.

Focus Lesson: …Triathlete! Preview: either individually or in small groups of 3, look through pages 10-16 of Racers and Racing magazine. Use steps #1 and #2 of the analysis process we’ve been working with and write one sentence predicting the main idea. Complete p. 46 in the student journal.

Focus Lesson: …Triathlete! Read: either individually or in small groups of 3, students should take turns reading pp. 10-16 of Racers and Racing magazine aloud using their “six-inch voices”. Pause after each page and evaluate how accurate your prediction is. Revise your sentence as necessary. Reflect: complete student journal pp. 47 and 48.
