Born August 2, 1924 When he was young he was adopted by David Baldwin When he was 17 years old, Baldwin turned away from his religion and moved to Greenwich Village

He attended DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx He studied at The New School He began to write short stories, essays, and book reviews Baldwin died November 30, 1987 at the age of 63 in Saint-Paul de Vence, France

Baldwin left the United States and departed to Paris, France He fled in order to see himself and his writing beyond an African American context While in Paris Baldwin started to be published in literary anthologies

Baldwin's first novel was Go Tell It on the Mountain, an autobiographical bildungsroman He wrote several other books and essays for example Down at the Cross, No Name in the Street, and many others in the book No Names in the Streets, he talks about his personal experience, and he close personal friends Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King

He returned to the United States and joined the Core and SNCC Took a lecture tour of the South for CORE Lectured to students and anyone else who was listening
