Graphs, Tables and Charts

What is a chart? A chart is a diagram that makes information easier to understand by showing how two or more sets of data are related. There are two common types of chart, a pie chart and a bar chart.

A pie chart is a circle divided into segments. It is usually used to show percentages.

A Bar chart is a diagram that makes information easier to understand by showing how two or more sets of data are related. A bar chart is divided into columns.

A graph is a diagram, usually a line or curve, which shows how two or more sets of numbers or measurements are related.

Another type of graph is a pictograph, which uses pictures to represent the number of items. These are used a lot in social studies.

Parts of a graph There will be a few key elements to any graph. The graph is a graphical interpretation of some data. Generally, you will create a spreadsheet that generates some type of data, and use the graph to illustrate the data. When you define a graph, you will need some way to explain which data is being depicted. You can usually select the data you want with a range. X and Y axes As you may remember, the X axis is the stuff that goes along the horizontal border of the chart. The Y axis is the vertical stuff. Most spreadsheet programs try to guess which stuff you want plotted as the X axis and which you want as the Y axis. If the graph looks completely wrong, you might want to look for some kind of feature that allows you to change the X - Y orientation. Upper and Lower Bounds You might want to specify the upper and lower limits of the axes. The program will usually try to guess what you want, but you may still need to modify it. Labels There will usually be an option for setting or changing the labels on a graph. This will allow you to put informative labels on the graph to make it easier to read.

A table is a set of facts and figures arranged in columns and rows.A table is a very useful way of organising numerical information.

So what do these graphs and charts show us? Graphs and charts are used to give us a visual representation of how data changes, usually over a period of time. The words we can use to describe the changes will be presented on the following slides.

What is a trend? Trends are the changes or movements in facts and figures over a period of time. We can use different verbs and nouns to describe trends Extrapolate means to find or “take out” the data we are looking for.

Downward movement (verbs) decline decrease drop fall slide lose ground crash collapse plummet plunge take a fall weaken

Upward movement (verbs) climb rise increase surge rocket soar gain go through the roof jump rally strengthen

Stability (verbs) flatten out hold steady level off stabilise bounce back rally recover

For specifying the degree of change we can use different adjectives Slow Steady Slight Sharp Gradual Disastrous Massive Perilous Rapid Heavy Nervous

What we have learned Graphs and charts are used to show the trends of data over time The axes on graphs tell us what data is being represented. We can extrapolate the data we need from graphs and charts to create and solve problems in order to find the information we need to answer a problem or question.
