2 Demand for services > 140,000 job opportunities are expected to arise –34,000 are new –110,00 are retirements and career moves 90,000 in health and 50,000 in social care 45,000 in personal service occupations 40,000 in associate professional & technical occupations – (25,000 in health 14,000 in social care).

3 Regional Skills and Social Care Context Over 250,000 staff in H&SC >50,000 have low or no qualifications 35,500 qualified to below Level 2 Forecast of 50,000 job opportunities by 2014 (retirement and expansion)

4 Regional Skills and Social Care Forecasts By 2014, H&SC employers will need: 12,000 more staff @ L4 or above 23,000 more staff @L3 or equivalent 15,000 more staff @ L2 or equivalent Skills gaps are highest for personal care and managers and leaders

5 Drivers for Change The policy agenda, and the NHS ‘Agenda for Change’ is placing an increasing emphasis on a patient-centred approach Technological change A Challenge to the traditional roles of nurses and healthcare assistants New standards and occupational competency requirements
