Can wall be split into two movable partitions (move doors to room corners) to create potential conference room flexibility? Attach door frame to column for increased equipment space Please explain reasoning for offset door … again? Align door with N-S Hall for equipment moving ease. (Add 2’ more from column.)

11/19/2015IENG 471 Facilities Planning 7 Learning Objectives Students will demonstrate: the ability to incorporate the 10 steps of the facility planning process. the ability to identify techniques and rationale for integrating product, process, quality, scheduling, and material handling in the facility design process. the ability to use the appropriate strategies to expand capacity.

11/19/2015IENG 471 Facilities Planning 8 Learning Objectives Students will demonstrate: the ability to determine a facility location using both quantitative and qualitative methods. the ability to construct a facility layout, given the necessary space requirements. the ability to construct a facility utilizing facility software, given the necessary space requirements. the ability to evaluative alternative facility configurations.

11/19/2015IENG 471 Facilities Planning 9 Learning Objectives Students will demonstrate: the ability to incorporate the principles of material handling when designing material handling systems. the ability to incorporate the principles of shipping and receiving in warehouse design. the ability to adapt an existing facility design to meet the needs of a client.

11/19/2015IENG 471 Facilities Planning 10 (Unofficial) Learning Objectives Students will be able to identify appropriate facilities design criteria Students will be able to identify and discuss the benefits and limitations of a particular facilities design model Students will explore new methods of engineering a facility Instructor will improve the course from good to very much better Students and Instructor will ENJOY facilities design

11/19/2015IENG 471 Facilities Planning 11 Materials Textbook: Tompkins, et.al. (2010). Facilities Planning (4 th ed.). Hoboken NJ: John Wiley & Sons. 854pp. ISBN 978-0-470-44404-7. (1 required per team*) Required: Engineering Problems Paper – 8-1/2" x 11", three hole drilled, ruled five squares/division, 50 pp. (approx.). Engineering Notebook – 9-3/4" x 7-1/2", 5x5 quad- ruled, 80-100 pp. (approx.).

11/19/2015IENG 471 Facilities Planning 12 Materials Recommended: Mechanical pencil – 0.5 mm, HB or B lead with comfortable grip Plastic-based eraser (clickable pen-style suggested) Engineering/Scientific calculator.

11/19/2015IENG 471 Facilities Planning 13 Expectations Grading Scale: A 90% B 80% C 70% D 60% F < 60% Weighting: Assignments25% Midterm Exam I25% Midterm Exam II25% Final Project25% Bonus Pts 5%

11/19/2015IENG 471 Facilities Planning 14 Expectations Assignments & Sub-Projects: Each question / project component is graded on a 10 point basis. Each assignment is equally weighted. Exams: Exams are open Engineering notebook; and closed textbook and homework. Necessary tables are identified, and may be provided. Final Project: Project is a team effort – but an adjustment may be made for significant individual contribution above/below team mean. Project Presentation will be given during last week of the course. Project Report will be due by 12:00 Noon, Wed., 16 DEC.

11/19/2015IENG 471 Facilities Planning 15 Expectations Due Dates / Late Work: Assignments and project work are due at the start of class on the due date (see Schedule page). Late assignments will receive 90% of the earned credit until 5:00 PM on the day of the deadline, and will be graded and returned at instructor convenience. Work submitted after that will not be accepted.

11/19/2015IENG 471 Facilities Planning 16 Expectations Make-up Work: Make-Up work is the student’s responsibility, and is arranged at the lecturer’s discretion. Policies: Foreseeable Circumstances - contact the lecturer as far in advance as possible (e-mail, after class). Unforeseeable Circumstances - contact the lecturer as soon as practical (leave phone message).

11/19/2015IENG 471 Facilities Planning 17 Expectations Academic Honesty: OK to work together on Individual HW as long as what appears on your sheet is your work, your words, and your writing OK to work together on Team HW team members may do individual parts and combine them Exams are always individual work

11/19/2015IENG 471 Facilities Planning 18 Questions & Issues Students with special needs or requiring special accommodations should contact the instructor, Dr. Jensen, at 393-5074 and/or the campus ADA coordinator, Megan Reder-Schopp, at 394-6988 at the earliest opportunity.

11/19/2015IENG 471 Facilities Planning 19 Term Project Planning Term Project will incorporate: Course content (slides & text tables) Teamwork (and knowledge about teams) Data collection (getting data on your own) Use of software (most is experimental) Project Presentation (everyone presents) Project Report (documentation, notes) Some out-of-class work Some in-class-time for your project

11/19/2015IENG 471 Facilities Planning 20 What to do for the Project? Some Options: 1. Everyone teams on the same “canned” facility Existing data collection Individual motivation 2. Teams work on CICHME facility Competition prizes Competition framework 3. Teams work on selected “Real World” facilities Data collection Professionalism 4. Teams work on selected campus facilities Data collection Individual motivation 5. Other?
