Goals Healthy Behaviors Parenting Classes Parents To reduce problem behavior in youngsters To learn how and when to apply disciplinary methods To learn communication skills to improve the parent-child relationship

What is a parenting class? Is training for parents to build skills to increase healthy behaviors and improve their family relationships Why a prevention program for parents ? Because there is clear evidence that children learn the practices, attitudes,values and behaviors of their parents. Who should attend ? Parenting classes are for all parents

W orkshops: Los Niños Bien Educados (Children Well Educated) –Purpose: To enable parents to assist their children with the challenges of growing up in the US –Target Group: Parents with children 2-10 years old – 6 sessions of 2 hrs each Common Sense Parenting – Purpose: To enrich parents with daily methods to improve children behavior – Target Group: Parents with children 5-18 years old –6 sessions of 2 hrs each Different children, Different strategies

Active Parents –Purpose is to learn: Disciplinary methods Effective communication How to increase self-esteem –Target group: Parents with children 2- 12 years old –5 sessions of 2 hrs each Parents Who Care –Purpose: To avoid or minimize risks in dealing with drugs, violence and related problem. –Target group: Parents with teens –6 sessions of 2 hrs each Parenting IS prevention W orkshops:

Emergency Situations –Purpose: To inform parents of what to do in emergencies such as basic first aid and tips for injury prevention –Target group: Parents with children –5 sessions of 2 hrs each W orkshops:

Here, Now and Down the Road – tips for loving parents –Target group: Parents of children 5-12 years old – 7 sessions of 2 hrs each Guiding Good Choices –How to Prevent Drug Use in Your Family –How to Say No to Drugs –target group: Parents of children 9-14 years old – 5 sessions of 2 hrs each Parenting IS prevention W orkshops:

1,2,3,4 Padres! –Purpose: to teach effective parenting techniques for parents of children ages 1 to 4 –Target group: Parents with children –5 sessions of 1.5 hrs each W orkshops: Parenting IS prevention

This program has been offered and taught in schools throughout the district including Galveston Elementary, Knox Elementary, San Marcos Elementary, Hartford Elementary, Bologna Elementary, Frye Elementary. It has been made available at different times including mornings, early evenings, nights and weekends. Length of classes are somewhat flexible. A variety of additional services are provided to the parents to facilitate their attendance. Some of these services are available depending on certain circumstances: Books and class material Gift certificates for completing the program Recognition for completing the course. In closing : Being a parent is difficult. Everyone wants to be a good parent but all are not prepared for it. That is what these courses try to address. They provide more tools and methods so that participants can reach their goal of becoming good parents. Parenting IS prevention
