Ways in which viewers of the site interact with it Story Commenting Letters to Editor Submissions Wedding Announcement Submissions Calendar Submissions Photo Submissions Subscriptions/Content Walls For many things (depending on site setup) a user has to become a registered user and login to perform some of these actions This webinar focuses on registration, commenting and subscription

3 Commenting Drives traffic, increases user interaction Allows users to interact with an article in a way they never could in print Options for: Anonymous or Registered Users Email Authentication Auto or Manual Approval Reporting Abuse/Abuse Threshold Comment/Abuse Notification Profanity Filters Spam Filtering User Avatars (BLOX only)

4 Anonymous vs. Registered Users Anonymous Pros: users do not have to fill out registration Cons: no way to ban someone anonymous (other than ip) users can make up screen name every time they post users can have conversations with themselves easily Registered Pros: can tie a comment to an actual user account/email address can ban users users remember each other easier Cons: some sites report drop in commenting when implementing registration * BLOX sites require that a user register in order to comment

5 Auto vs. Manual Approval Manual Approval Pros: nothing makes it to the site with out someone approving it first can setup email notification for when users submit comments Cons: approving comments can be quite time consuming comments take longer to show on the site depending on how often someone approves them Auto Approval Pros: comments show on site much faster no one has to constantly approve comments all day Checks such as email authentication, profanity filters, report abuse, terms of use statements and user banning reduce malicious behavior Cons: still possible for malicious comments to make it to the site

7 User Profiles/Dashboard (BLOX only) User A can view User B’s profile including: What other comments that person has made Bio, political/religious views, hobbies, favorite music/TV/movies/books/quotes My Dashboard area allows a user to edit their own profile Future enhancements to dashboard will allow for: User contributed articles and images Personal blogs Business management (if user owns a business) Calendar event submission Management of services the user has such as online subscription Announcement Submissions (engagement, wedding, birth, anniversary)

9 Subscribers Subscribers vs. Registered User Registered users simply creates an account Subscriber is generally paying for some service Print Subscribers vs. Online Subscribers Print Subscribers get access through you periodically uploading a CSV file that contains all subscriber information (name, account #, etc.). You’ll need to provide them a username and password. Online Subscribers pay for access (1 week, 1 month, 1 year, etc.) online with a credit card then have a username/password to login

10 Subscribers (continued) Print Subscription Forms Can be setup to accept payment Your bank account gets credited and you get an email with the subscribers information which you then enter into your subscription system Payment Handlers PayPal Payflow Pro Authorize.net
