C-5.01 - Infant care1 Caring for Infants
2
C-5.01 - Infant care2 I need help with this little girl. I am Briggs and I am two. This is my sister Eli. I call her E-I. Eli is six months old.
3
C-5.01 - Infant care3 We go to a child care center, but I call it school. It is very important to me that Eli gets good care. My Mama, Dada, and I love her very much.
4
C-5.01 - Infant care4 1.Hand washing 2.Feeding 3.Diapering 4. Naptime There are four step-by- step procedures you need to be able to apply to work with Eli. Can you help me name them?
5
C-5.01 - Infant care5 Sit back and relax and help, really help, me now. I will help you when you do not know the steps. Remember, I am watching you because she is my E-I!
6
C-5.01 - Infant care6 When it is time for a change, or when it is time for a feeding, what do you as E-I’s caregiver need to do? This a very important procedure.
7
C-5.01 - Infant care7 BEFORE FEEDING OR DIAPERING Lather Scrub Rinse Turn off Dry Gloves I am watching you. What do you do before you start to feed or change E-I?
8
C-5.01 - Infant care8 Hand Washing when Diapering 1.Turn on water at 100-110 degrees Fahrenheit and wet hands. 2. Using liquid soap, rub hands and wrists back and forth to lather all parts well, including under fingernails. 3. Scrub for 15-20 seconds.
9
C-5.01 - Infant care9 Hand Washing when Diapering 4. Rinse well for at least 10 seconds with warm water, keeping hands pointed down. 5. Use a paper towel or elbow to turn off the faucet. Do not touch faucet controls with clean hands. 6.Using a mechanical dryer or paper towels, dry hands thoroughly. 7. Discard paper towels in lined can.
10
C-5.01 - Infant care10 What care procedure do you think would make E-I happy if she were crying? Right, feed her. I will help you get started. Move on to the next slide!
11
C-5.01 - Infant care11 The first thing you do when Mama drops E-I off at school with her bottles is? 1.Immediately label and refrigerate breast or formula bottles of milk.
12
C-5.01 - Infant care12 2. Discard any formula or breast milk that has not been refrigerated for two hours. Time for step 2! What is it? I will give you a hint. You forgot to put the milk in the refrigerator. What do you do?
13
C-5.01 - Infant care13 3. Remove bottle from refrigerator and run warm water over the bottle to bring to room temperature. Step 3 My sister does not like her milk cold so…..
14
C-5.01 - Infant care14 My Aunt Billie knows how important the next steps are. She loves E-I so it is easy for her to do this. Have you guessed what the next 2 steps are? 4. Hold baby during bottle feeding. When baby gets bigger and can hold his/her own bottle, it’s okay to put baby in an age-appropriate seating device and give bottle. 5. Watch for signs of fullness. Crying in response to bottle Turning head away Closing mouth tightly Pushing away bottle/breast Stopping sucking
15
C-5.01 - Infant care15 7. After one hour, discard any used formula left in the bottle. I am going to be really mad if you don’t do this last step. I do not want E-I to get sick! Okay, name it.
16
C-5.01 - Infant care16 There is a strange smell in this school and it is time for a new procedure. It is the last thing you need to do for E-I. Hint! This procedure is done on demand, not on a schedule. Did you guess? Diapering
17
C-5.01 - Infant care17 I am out of here. My Mama is going to show you the rest of the procedure. She is my expert. See ya!!!!!
18
C-5.01 - Infant care18 This is my beautiful family. Dada, Mama, E-I and me. Mama will do the stinky stuff! Remember she is the expert. Dada can change diapers, too.
19
C-5.01 - Infant care19 Hello, caregivers. What do you think you should do first and second? 1. Wash hands properly and apply gloves. 2. Gather necessary items for diapering, (diaper, baby wipes, and so on).
20
C-5.01 - Infant care20 4. Remove clothing that is covering the infant’s bottom. 3. Place infant on his/her back on the changing table.
21
C-5.01 - Infant care21 5. Remove the soiled diaper. Fold soiled area inside and discard.
22
C-5.01 - Infant care22 6. Clean the infant’s bottom from front to back with a baby wipe or wet wash cloth.
23
C-5.01 - Infant care23 7. Place a clean diaper under the infant.
24
C-5.01 - Infant care24 Diapering 8. Avoid baby powder, ointments, and other products unless instructed in writing by a parent. If ingested, baby powder can harm the lungs of an infant.
25
C-5.01 - Infant care25 9.Check for signs of diaper rash. If needed, and if you have written parent permission, apply ointment.
26
C-5.01 - Infant care26 10. Complete putting on diaper, fasten clothes, and wash baby’s hands.
27
C-5.01 - Infant care27 11. Remove gloves and wash hands. 12. Move infant to a safe location. 13. Disinfect the changing table. 13. Record diapering information on the daily record.
28
C-5.01 - Infant care28 AFTER DIAPERING Remove gloves and wash hands Move baby Disinfect area Record diapering information I have to get out of here because I know what is coming next! But what do you have to do after you change that diaper? Think really hard!!!!!!
29
C-5.01 - Infant care29 Do you have any idea what the next procedure could be? Dada and I like to do this, too. Naptime
30
C-5.01 - Infant care30 1. Schedule naps with parents’ preferences in mind. Stagger naptimes to meet the individual needs of infants under your care. Naptime is like having a garden. There are some procedures you have to follow so it will grow and bear fruit. First, you have to find out from the parents what their preferences are for baby’s naptimes. Does E-I take a nap at home? What time does E-I go to bed? Tonight, Mama and Dada are taking us out to eat, so they what us both to take a nap. Click your mouse and check out the first procedure for naptimes.
31
C-5.01 - Infant care31 2. If needed, use music and stories to calm infants before naptime. 3. If feeding is needed before naptime, hold infants to feed them their pre-nap bottles. Remember Aunt Billie held E-I and rocked her to sleep in a nice chair like mine. If E-I is excited and needs to calm down to get sleepy, sometimes she reads her a story or plays soft music first. So, what are these next steps?
32
C-5.01 - Infant care32 4. Put infant in crib. For safety reasons, it’s never okay to prop an infant’s bottle or give it to them while they are lying down. After she falls to sleep what are you going to do with her? Should you leave her on the couch?
33
C-5.01 - Infant care33 See how beautiful and happy E-I is now that you have taken care of her. Thanks for the help. I am off to the Golf Club. See ya!
34
C-5.01 - Infant care34 Remember: You are trusted with our future!!
