11 T Dipole Informal Coil and Assembly Readiness Review CERN 23-24 September 2013 Review committee: Herman Ten Kate CERN (Chair) Fred Nobrega FNAL Davide Tommasini CERN

 CERN and FNAL are jointly developing the 11 T 2-in-1 dipole since October 2010  Two 1-in-1 model magnets have been tested at FNAL and the quench performance indicate substantial conductor degradation  The short model magnet program in both labs is currently addressing the suspected performance limitations by constructing a series of 1-in-1 and 2-in-1 model magnets  1 st 2-m-long Nb 3 Sn coil based on FNAL coil technology has been completed at CERN  CERN expect to test the first 1-in-1 model magnet in March 2014  The purpose of this review is to provide feed-back on CERN coil fabrication process and the readiness to assemble the first 1-in-1 model magnet Introduction 23-24 Sep 2013M. Karppinen CERN TE-MSC

 Develop and qualify the Nb 3 Sn coil technology for 5.5-m- long magnets: o Coil design o Components: cable, insulation, wedges, end parts, etc. o Tooling and infrastructure o Fabrication process o Quality control and instrumentation o R&D topics o Scale-up to 5.5 m coils  Validate the cold mass design and assembly process for 5.5-m-long magnets : o Cold mass design o Components: collars, yoke, end plates, shell, etc. o Assembly process o Assembly tooling o Quality control and instrumentation Short Magnet Program Goals 23-24 Sep 2013M. Karppinen CERN TE-MSC

 Is the planned CERN short model program adequate to qualify magnet design and fabrication process for the 5.5- m-long prototype magnet?  Is the time scale realistic, what are the possible bottlenecks, and are there sufficient human resources to execute the plan? Review questions: Program 23-24 Sep 2013M. Karppinen CERN TE-MSC

 Are the cable design, cabling process, and quality control of dimensional and electro-magnetic parameters well established?  What short and longer term improvements could be implemented?  Is the conductor procurement plan compatible with the model magnet program?  Does the conductor and cable meet the requirements for 5.5-m-long Nb 3 Sn coils? Review questions: Cable 23-24 Sep 2013M. Karppinen CERN TE-MSC

 Are the lessons from FNAL model program implemented?  Is the coil fabrication process and quality control at the required level to ensure: o Dimensional accuracy o Electrical integrity of the coils o Reproducibility o Traceability  Is all coil fabrication tooling and infrastructure ready and operational?  Does the coil instrumentation provide sufficient information to understand and monitor the magnet behavior during testing?  Can the magnet be safely operated and is the proposed protection scheme scalable for full-size magnets? Review questions: Coil 23-24 Sep 2013M. Karppinen CERN TE-MSC

 Is the understanding of the mechanical behavior of the magnet clear and applicable for the real-life construction process ?  Does the mechanical instrumentation provide sufficient information to understand and monitor the magnet behavior during construction and testing?  Is magnet assembly tooling adequate and operational?  Is magnet assembly process appropriate and scalable for long magnet? Review questions: Assembly 23-24 Sep 2013M. Karppinen CERN TE-MSC

 The review committee is asked to evaluate and comment on the information presented and to the answers provided for the questions above  Any other observations, comments and recommendations are welcome Review Charge 23-24 Sep 2013M. Karppinen CERN TE-MSC
