3 SUCCESS CRITERIA By the end of this section you should be able to: Describe the three types of volcano – active, dormant and extinct. Give 2 benefits of living in a volcanic area. Understand the key terms to help describe an earthquake. Explain how earthquakes are measured and recorded.

5 TYPES OF VOLCANOES Active – A volcano that could erupt at any time. Dormant – A volcano that has not erupted for a long time, 100 years or more. Extinct – A volcano that can’t erupt again.

8 Volcanoes release poisonous gases, clouds of dust, ash and lava bombs. The lava can reach temperatures of over 100°C and will destroy everything in its path. Lava bombs vary in size from small particles up to the size of cars! These bombs can flatten houses and start fires. A lava bomb

9 Volcanic eruptions can also spark other hazards such as mud flows, landslides, earthquakes, ash-fall, acid rain and tsunamis.
