Skill related fitness components More difficult to improve than straight forward physiological fitness components. Repetitive skill drills! The brain learns patterns of movement with regular practice and becomes better at anticipating – information passed more efficiently via central nervous system to our muscles.

Strength Hypertrophy of muscles “ the maximum force that can be developed within a muscle or group of muscles during a single maximal contraction “

Flexibility Greatest range of movement possible at a given joint. Governed by elasticity of ligaments, tendons and strength of muscle groups

Agility The ability to move in a controlled way and to change direction, turn, stop and start quickly.

Balance Ability to keep our centre of gravity (bulk of bodyweight) over our base of support. Implies a sense of control.

Timing Performing a skill at exactly the right time = effective

Coordination Interaction between body’s motor (movement) system and nervous system. Enables various parts of body to combine in producing desired movement or sequence of movements.
