ARCH 2330 It all began as the disability rights movement The movement grew out of the civil rights movement of 1960 It was when people with disabilities began to challenge social barriers that excluded and segregated them from their communities,. The first version was introduced in April of 1988 Sign Into law on July 26, 1990 by President George H.W. Bush. The ADA was originally enacted in public law format then rearranged and published in the United States Code. The nations proper goals regarding individuals with disabilities was to assure equal opportunity, full participation, independent living and economic self sufficiency. History Team Three- MP

4. ARCH 2330 People with disabilities occupy an inferior status in our society. They had a severe disadvantage socially, vocationally, economically and educationally. The legislation prohibits discrimination and guarantees that people with disabilities have the same opportunities as everyone else to participate in the mainstream of American life. 5. The term “Disability”: A physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities of such individual or a record of such an impairment. Some major life activities include; caring for oneself, performing manual tasks, seeing, hearing, eating, sleeping, walking, standing, lifting, bending, speaking, breathing, learning, reading, concentrating, thinking, communicating, and working.
