3 rd Grade Part Five Review
2
What Plants Need Water Light Soil (for nutrients) Air
3
What parts does a plant have? flower leaves stem roots Take in air and light that plants need to make food Moves water through the plant; supports the plant above ground Take in water and minerals; hold plant in the soil Makes seeds for new plants to grow
4
Parts of a Seed A tiny seedling plant Food Seed coat seed coat seedling plant food
5
Seeds Most plants reproduce by making seeds. Can be spread in the air, water, or by animals Can be found in flowers or cones
6
Life Cycle of Plant A seed is planted and given water. The seed germinates and begins to grow roots. The seedling develops leaves for photosynthesis. The seedling continues to grow. The adult plant produces seeds to begin the cycle again.
7
The food making process of plants Photosynthesis Water and nutrients sunlight Carbon dioxide oxygen
8
Plant Adaptations Parts of a plant that help it adapt to meet its needs in its environment –Tendrils (help to reach sunlight) –Thorns and spines (protect from being eaten) –Spines/modified leaves (conserve water) –Shallow roots (absorb the most water)
9
Inherited Traits of Plants Plants have traits they get from the parent plant that help them survive in their habitat. Inherited traits in plants include color, size, shape, and texture of the plant.
10
Needs of Animals Oxygen – through lungs or gills Food – energy from eating plants, other animals, or both Water – from drinking in lakes or ponds or from food Shelter - protects from weather and other animals Light A way to dispose of wastes
11
Inherited Traits Examples: brown fur, long ears, ability to spin a web, ability to swim Some are body parts: Brown fur Long ears Horns Fins Some are behaviors: Ability to spin a web Ability to swim Migrate for winter Build a nest
12
Adaptations of Animal Groups Mammals Have hair or fur on their body Breathe with lungs Females make milk to feed their babies Live birth Live on land or in water Birds Have feathers, two wings, and two legs. Breathe with lungs Hatch from eggs Live on land
13
Adaptations of Animal Groups Reptiles Have dry skin covered with scales Most lay eggs on land Live in water or on land Breathe with lungs Amphibians Begin life underwater and move to land as adults Lay eggs in water Have smooth, moist skin Breathe with gills at first, then lungs. Fish Most have skin covered with scales Live in water Breathe with gills Most lay eggs
14
Metamorphosis A change in the form or structure of an animal, usually from birth to adulthood Adult Egg Larva Pupa Life Cycle of a Butterfly
15
The Frog Life Cycle Frogs go through a metamorphosis, or change, as they grow.
