Naming Organic Compounds Organic compounds are composed of mostly Carbon and Hydrogen Therefore they are referred to as hydrocarbons Hydrogen Carbon
9
Three part name Hydrocarbons have three parts to their name. prefix-root-suffix We are going to look at the prefix first
10
Prefixes Meth-1 Eth-2 Prop-3 But-4 Pent-5 Hex-6 Hept-7 Oct-8 Non-9 Dec-10 The prefix is simply the number of carbons in the longest chain.
11
Root Alkanes –Have only single bonds between carbons –The root is –ane –C n H 2n+2 Alkenes –One or more double bonds between C’s –The root is –ene –C n H 2n Alkynes –One or more triple bonds between C’s –The root is –yne –C n H 2n-2

16
Functional group suffixes Only two suffixes you need to know Alcohols –Have an -OH group attached to the carbon backbone –Drop e and add -ol Carboxylic Acids –Have a -COOH in the formula –Drop e and add -oic acid
17
Practice CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 OH How many Carbons Draw it Any functional groups? Propane x ol
