FOOD PRODUCTION ISSUES
2
PROBLEMS IN ATTEMPTING TO RAISE FOOD AVAILABILITY…. Farmers farming marginal land (poor quality land) where sustained use is impossible. Land shortages have led to deforestation. Overgrazing has damaged the soil (mostly on the continents of Asia and Africa)
3
Food subsidies as an international issue… Developed countries with government subsidies encourage large quantities of food. These large quantities keep prices HIGH.
4
TRADE PROTECTION POLICIES AND DISTRIBUTION COSTS Developing countries complain because they suffer the loss of trade/exports to developed countries. Cheap surplus food from the developed world undercuts local farming efforts.
5
Developing countries supporting increased food production Government price support (corn in Zimbabwe) Technical and planning assistance to farmers Easy access to credit Better transportation to market Cheaper supplies of fertilizer and pesticides Research for new ways of farming.
