Atlanta Led the Municipal Wireless Broadband Trend City launched wireless broadband initiative in 2002 City partnered with Biltmore Communications on FastPass –Focused on hotspots at City Hall, airport, tourist destinations, and universities Hartsfield Jackson International Airport launched Wi-Fi service in November, 2005

What Can Wireless Broadband Bring to Atlanta? Citywide umbrella of anytime, anywhere access to information High value access for all visitors, residents, and businesses –Free access in some public places, City buildings –Affordable access for low-income families –Low cost access for residents, businesses, and visitors –Able to go beyond access to applications More efficient, lower cost government services Potential to roam throughout Metro area

Atlanta’s Opportunity to Become a Digital City Time is Now Fits with Mayor’s Strategic Goals for Second Term –Strengthen Economic Development –Improve Quality of Life Potential for little to no taxpayer investment through public/private partnership

Wireless Broadband: Enhancing Quality of Life Support existing redevelopment initiatives (Beltline & Peachtree Corridor) Reinforce City image & brand Improve visitor experience through location based services Free access at some attractions (Centennial Olympic Park, Piedmont Park, etc.)

Wireless Broadband: Enhancing Quality of Life Strengthen Public Safety / Homeland Security –Allow mobile reporting –Real time intelligence sharing –Streaming video –Virtual lineups for victims Improve Transportation –Online, productive while on MARTA –Real time access to Georgia Navigator, etc

Wireless Broadband & Economic Development Wireless broadband will support Atlanta’s New Century Economic Development Plan: –Target industries with greatest potential for Job Growth –Strengthen business recruitment, retention, and expansion efforts Attract “Creative Class” Increase economic vitality of underserved areas

Cooperative Wholesale Business Model Uses no taxpayer dollars to fund or operate –City will provide access to mounting assets and act as anchor tenant City selects company to fund, own, and operate the network –Selected Service Provider will provide wholesale services to other Service Providers –Selected Service Provider will provide retail service to government, residents and businesses

Wireless Services Delivered Consumer mobile and residential Small business mobile and office Medium to large business T1 and higher replacement Separate & secure government services Coverage outdoors and “to the door”
