GETTING RESPECT THE DEREK JETER WAY

TURN AND TALK TO A PARTNER  Who is Derek Jeter?  Do you think he was as he as good as a rookie 20 years ago as he is now?  How do you think he got to be so good?  Why do you think people respect him enough to “tip their hat to him” repeatedly? BIG QUESTION: WHAT CAN WE LEARN ABOUT WRITING FROM DEREK JETER?

BIG QUESTION ANSWERED HARD WORK, PRACTICE, AND DEDICATION CAN GET YOU PRETTY FAR.

TIME TO GET THE POWER! Let’s get started with a prompt you can all talk about first! Who made the greatest contribution to the industrial and economic growth of America? Explain why. WHAT ARE YOUR IDEAS—QUICKLY SHARE THEM WITH A PARTNER

LET’S MODEL! Answer the prompt question here: Bill Gates made the greatest contribution to the industrial and economic growth of America.  Notice the language in this sentence is very similar to the prompt.

LET’S MODEL! WHY was this industrialist most important? He co-founded Microsoft, the world’s largest computer software company, which changed the computer industry forever. Try to come up with a really interesting REASON WHY your choice was the most important!

LET’S MODEL! How can you prove this? What evidence can you offer to back up what you said about the person you chose doing the best job contributing to the economic and industrial growth of America? Less than 10 years after it was founded, 30% of the world’s computers ran with Microsoft operating systems.

LET’S MODEL How or why does your evidence on the last slide connect with who/what you selected as your reason? By the 1990s, the Microsoft name was synonymous with all PC computers.

LET’S MODEL! What do you want your reader to remember about your choice for the person who best contributed to the industrial and economic growth of America? The development of Microsoft revolutionized and popularized the use of computers throughout the world making Bill Gates the entrepreneur who had the biggest impact on both economy and industry in the U.S.

YOUR TURN! You’re going to work independently, BUT you can ask/ talk to your neighbor or one of the teachers in the room if you get stuck. NO FEAR! USE THE BRAINSTORMING PAGE TO FIGURE OUT Who made the greatest contribution to the industrial and economic growth of America? Explain why.

THE POWER ACRONYM P PRESENT your main idea. What is the topic of this paragraph? ALWAYS ANSWER THE QUESTION OR RESPOND DIRECTLY TO THE PROMPT! O OFFER a reason why this is your main idea. What point do you want to make about the topic? W WIDEN your information. What is your proof? Go to the text for support—offer evidence! E EXPLAIN the connection between your proof and the topic. How or why is this all connected? R RESTATE your main idea. What do you want your readers to really know about this topic? What is an acronym? Can you think of any others? How can acronyms help you learn something? WORK ALONE OR WITH A PARTNER TO TRY TO MATCH THE POWER LETTER TO THE CORRECT BRAINSTORMING BOX.

FIGURING IT OUT! Use the blank space in the POWER template and transfer your brainstorming to the correct spot. DOES THIS MODEL MAKE SENSE?

TIME TO GO FOR IT! NOW YOU HAVE ALL THE TOOLS YOU NEED TO WRITE YOUR PARAGRAPH. MAKE IT CLEAR—USE TRANSITION WORDS. YOU CAN DO IT!
