1 Photosynthesis:  glucose + oxygen  CO2 H2O O2 light energy + carbon
C6H12O6 O2 light energy +  glucose + oxygen carbon dioxide sun + water + enzymes enzymes

2 + Photosynthesis ATP CO2 2 separate processes:
1. ENERGY building reactions collect sun’s energy called the “light” rxns Occur during the day time use it to make ATP (store) 2. Glucose building reactions use the stored ATP energy collect CO2 from air (stomates in the leaves) & H2O from ground (roots) use build glucose (Energy rich molecule – E stored in bonds Do NOT require light sun ATP H2O + CO2 glucose

3 Photosynthesis using sun’s energy to make ATP
using CO2 & water to make glucose in chloroplasts Glucose: allows plants to grow used for Respiration by the plant stored as starch passed along the food chain to consumers who use it for Respiration makes a waste product oxygen (O2) – looks like “bubbles” in water used for Respiration

4 What do plants need to grow?
The “factory” for making energy & sugars chloroplast Fuels sunlight carbon dioxide water The Helpers enzymes Make ATP! Make sugar! I can do it all… And no one even notices! sun CO2 ATP enzymes sugars H2O

5 Photosynthesis ADP + P ATP ENERGY building reactions
sun Photosynthesis Useable energy ENERGY building reactions ADP + P ATP SUGAR building reactions used immediately to synthesize sugars H2O glucose CO2

6 chlorophyll (a pigment)
Chloroplasts absorb sunlight (green reflected) Chloroplasts contain chlorophyll (a pigment) sun CO2 Individual disk = thylakoid Stack of thylakoids = grana – grana are green – absorb light – except green!!!! ENERGY storing rxns – light reactions Space in between grana = stroma SUGAR building rxns - dark reactions make ATP & glucose

7 Energy flow – need a constant supply (does NOT recycle)
sun Energy flow – need a constant supply (does NOT recycle) Photosynthesis plants, protists, some bacteria H2O CO2 glucose O2 animals, plants, fungi, protists, bacteria Cellular Respiration Useable energy ATP The Great Carbon Cycle ADP + P

8 Together they form the Carbon Cycle
sun Together they form the Carbon Cycle capture light energy Photosynthesis Synthesis producers, autotrophs H2O CO2 O2 organic molecules (carbs, proteins, fats) waste waste waste consumers, heterotrophs digestion Cellular Respiration release chemical energy stored in bonds
