The Chloroplast Unit 4: Energize Your Life
2
Chloroplasts Chloroplasts are found in the cells of plants. Chloroplasts absorb light energy and make food through photosynthesis.
3
Photosynthesis Reactants: water and carbon dioxide Products: glucose and oxygen 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O + light C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2
4
Chlorophyll Chloroplasts contain a pigment called chlorophyll. A pigment is a light-absorbing molecule. Chlorophyll reflects green light and absorbs all other colors of light.
5
Thylakoids Chloroplasts contain sack-like photosynthetic membranes called thylakoids. Thylakoids are arranged in stacks called grana. The light-dependent reactions occur in the thylakoids.
6
Stroma The area outside the thylakoids is called the stroma. The light-independent reactions occur in the stroma.
