Chapter 14 The Behavior of Gases 14.1 Properties of Gases

Compressibility  Gases do not have a definite volume.  A gas will fill a given space.  Gases can be compressed due to the space between the particles.

Aerosol Cans  Contain a liquid and pressurized gas.  When valve is opened the gas forces liquid out.

Factors Affecting Gas Pressure Variables  P: Pressure in kPa  V: Volume in liters  T: Temperature in Kelvin  n: number of moles 1. volume, 2. temperature and 3. amount of gas (number of moles) all affect gas pressure.

1. Volume- V Assume a closed container  If the volume of a certain gas is compressed the gas pressure _______________.  If more space is given to a certain gas, the gas pressure ______________.

2. Temperature -T Assume a closed container  If temperature increases, pressure increases due to…  Higher kinetic energy  Particles move faster, colliding faster/more often with container walls = higher pressure.

3. Amount of Gas- n  If gas molecules are added to a container, pressure increases.  Doubling the number of particles doubles the gas pressure, tripling …triples…  If pressure exceeds strength of container, it bursts!
