Note-taking is a skill which you will need in order to be a successful student. It's also a skill which your future employer wants you to have: to be able to summarise what has been said or written, in a clear, concise form, with no important facts left out.

Note-taking does not mean writing down everything you read or hear. Your notes should be a clear summary of essential points in a text or lecture. Be selective about what you write down. Notes should help you to: Fix information in your mind, and Revise. Discuss any approaches to note-taking that you use

One approach Draw a line about 1/3 of the way in from the right of the page Visual representations (e.g. concept maps) could be used. Write the title and name of the presenter here Summarise the presentation here under appropriate sub- headings. Write down your own thoughts and any questions you think of here Sketch diagrams, but don’t lose focus on the presentation. Use bullet points if it helps. Copy equations and formulae accurately

After the presentation It is important to do follow-up work after a presentation/lecture/podcast. Statistics show that most people forget what they have been taught very quickly. Summarise your notes Write down the main points to make it easy to revise for exams later. Clarify your notes If any parts of the podcast were unclear, ask the teacher about them, or check your text books. Highlight your notes Make the key points stand out by underlining them or highlight them in a bright colour.
