Lesson 17 Anchor Activity

Overview Purpose Timeline Possible Resources Grading Rubric Device Selection

Purpose Purpose: Opportunity for YOU to see how the principles YOU learned in the module apply to some kind of device YOU use. Way to assess what YOU have learned about energy, machines, and motion.

Timeline Select Device – Monday, Nov 29 Project Due – Monday, Dec 13  You will be assigned a specific date for your presentation by Friday Dec 10. Fill in the other dates on the Time Line to meet your individual needs.

Resources See attached sheet on proper Bibliographical Form  You must have at least 3 sources. Two of those must be books.  Wikipedia is not an appropriate resource.  Search engines (google, ask jeeves, etc) are not appropriate resources. Possible websites for research:  www.howstuffworks.com www.howstuffworks.com  www.about.com www.about.com

Helpful Websites Additional Links on Mrs. Wardlaw’s Classnotes: : Sci-ber Machines : More info on simple machines, work, and power : Try Engineering : Find out about different fields within engineering, check out colleges, and find out more about how you can get ready now for an engineering career. : Ed Heads Simple Machines : On-line activity identifying simple machines around the house. : Simple Machine Websites : Lots of great websites with information and activities about simple machines. : Funderstanding Roller Coaster : Another Roller Coaster Creation applet : Roller Coaster Physics : Learn all about the different forces in action on a Roller Coaster : Energy, Machines, and Motion Student Site : The website designed to accompany our Energy, Machines, and Motion Lab Book. : Sci-ber Forces : More information on Forces : Energy Transformations : Practice identifying types of Energy and Energy Transformations : Amusement Park Physics : Learn more about Roller Coasters, and put your knowledge to use designing one!Sci-ber MachinesTry EngineeringEd Heads Simple MachinesSimple Machine WebsitesFunderstanding Roller CoasterRoller Coaster PhysicsEnergy, Machines, and Motion Student SiteSci-ber ForcesEnergy TransformationsAmusement Park Physics

Presentation Individual Project Only presentation will be graded. May do a PowerPoint or poster presentation. If PowerPoint, you must use WebDocs (see handout)  See Mrs. Wardlaw with problems  Try out your presentation on a school computer before you give it to the class!

Grading Rubric ComponentDescriptionPointsPossible 1. OperationOperates device properly2 2. DescriptionDescribes how the device works2 3. Materials Describes what materials are used to make the device 2 4. History Who invented the device When was it invented Where was it first used 3 5. Energy Describes all energy changes that take place when operating the device 2 6. Forces Identify the forces that act when the device works 2 7. Machines Identify the simple machines which make up your device 2

Grading Rubric ComponentDescriptionPointsPossible 8. Motion Describes the motions that occur when the device operates 2 9. Improvements or modifications Describe how you can change the device to make it work better or do some new task Demonstrate your change if possible 4 10. Presentation Logically Organized Easy to read Uses appropriate pictures or drawings Includes picture or drawing of device Maintain a serious attitude 5 11. Resources Displays a proper bibliography At least 3 resources are used, 2 must be books 4 Final Score 30

Device Selection  Get teacher approval on device before you begin your research! Device must be something that you can bring and operate in the classroom. Device should be simple enough for research, but complex enough to meet the needs of the project.
