Jan 1979- the Shah abdicated Power struggle ensued as the people only agreed on the fact that the shah had to go-nothing else really (ongoing struggle) As the revolution was drawing to a close with an inevitable win for the people, they full-heartedly believed they were entering better times The boldness of the people increased as they began to publicly express their emotions-happiness

Khomeini became head of the new Islamic Republic of Iran He was a conservative cleric As such his views were derived from Iranian Shia Islam He believed previous governments failed because they had not followed Islamic law

June 1989, Khomeini died of a heart attack Still a theocracy, but with a new leader Khamenei became the new spiritual authority Then Rafsanjani was voted into presidency They tried to improve international relations and economy Rafsanjani created a 5 year plan in 1989 o Foreign borrowing and investment

Rafsanjani lost the 2005 election to Mahmud Ahmadi- Nejad, who is right wing Once in power human rights violations increased Tight grip on dissident groups and women’s clothing The economy has improved Unemployment and inflation have gone gown But he is running the highest deficit since the revolution
