2 Preliminaries  A person who is fickle lacks constancy or stability, especially in her affections towards others. In your journals, respond to the following prompt: “How does the fickle nature of the American people contribute to the unstable careers of pop stars? What examples can you list of stars that were ‘hot’ one month, and ‘not’ the next? What does the expression ‘the flavor of the month’ suggest about the fickle nature of the American people?”

3 Objectives:  Be able to define how the opening scene reveals the character of the Roman plebians.  Be able to define how the Tribunes characterize Caesar as a “dragon-like” figure.  Be able to define pun and metaphor and explain how Shakespeare incorporated these devices in the play.

5 Focus Lesson: Caesar…  We will now begin to listen to Act I of the play on audio. Please follow along in the textbook as we listen and write down QNTs which illustrate the following:  lines that reveal the Roman plebians being fickle towards Caesar  lines where Marullus and Flavius attempt to portray Caesar as a dragon-like figure  Meet in small groups (pairs, 3 max.) to write specific line numbers in Act I where the QNTs were previously taken.

6 Homework: Caesar…  Read Julius Caesar Act I scenes 1 and 2 (pp. 758-771).  While you read, be prepared to write about what kind of a character Caesar is.
