Geography - A subcontinent is a large landmass that just out from a continent. - A raised area of level land is known as a plateau. - Defined as a seasonal wind, a monsoon is an important feature of Indian life. They are also known for incredible amounts of rain.

Indus Valley - India has many different cultures with many different peoples and languages. - We do not know much about the people of the Indus Valley, but we know their empires were mass in size similar to the early Persian Empire.

Cities - The two main cities were Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro. Both cities had a massive fortress or temple in the middle with huge warehouses to store grain. - Each city laid out in a grid pattern with rectangular large blocks, larger than modern day blocks.

Lifestyle - These included market places, homes, and a well organized government. Had modern day plumbing with baths, drains, and water chutes. - Most Indus Valley people were farmers. They grew crops like wheat, barley, melons, and dates.

Lifestyle - Others were merchants and traders. The traded goods like cotton cloth, grain, copper, pearls, and ivory combs. - Like other ancient people, The Indus Valley religious beliefs were Polytheistic.

Religion - Many had a mother goddess and sacred animals. These helped influence later Indian beliefs about veneration or the special regard for cattle. - These people slowly declined as a new group moved in from the North known as a the Aryans.
