Why dialogue matters in the student experience Alasdair Blair Sam McGinty

NTFS ‘It’s Good to Talk: Feedback, dialogue and Learning 3 years 2009-2012 £200,000 3 institutions: De Montfort, London Metropolitan, Warwick History Politics/International Relations

Project aims Our long term aim is for feedback- dialogues to be consistently embedded as part of the feedback process for students. This will be reflected in a greater uptake of tutorials and peer feedback opportunities, with an upward trend in rapidity of improvement and understanding.

Dialogue A range of feedback researchers have argued for engaging students in a dialogue (Sadler, 1989; Hounsell & Hounsell 2007; Nicol & Macfarlane-Dick, 2006). Feedback should be a collaborative process that ‘encourages teacher and peer dialogue around learning’ (Nicol & Macfarlane-Dick, 2006, p. 205). Peer feedback can be defined as ‘a communication process through which learners enter into dialogues related to performance and standards’ (Lui & Carless, 2006, p. 280).

Pilot study findings QuestionnaireDMULondon Met Dialogue on examination scripts: Frequently: 8% Sometimes: 12% Frequently: 4.8% Sometimes:24.5% Opportunities to be involved in peer feedback Frequently:13.2% Sometimes:45.6% Frequently:7.4% Sometimes:28.2% Tutorials to discuss assignment feedback Frequently:34.2% Sometimes:53.5% Frequently:10.2% Sometimes:37.1%

Pilot study findings Interview data: They will give you your work back and they will let you start to ask questions and then they will explain why you have got that mark (Rosie, History, Yr 2) Most of my tutors invite me to collect my essay which I feel is far more constructive…when they go through what I’ve written I find it more helpful (Scott, Eng/History, Yr 3) The verbal interviews have always been good. It makes it more personal and they talk through how I felt about the essay. (Mark, History, Year 2)

Outcomes Develop a range of feedback-dialogue models Increase understanding and engagement through dialogue strategies (feedback pro- forma, blogs, peer feedback, tutorial system)
