One of the most common ways to use commas is to separate two main clauses that are connected by a junction. This means that when you join to sections that could be sentences on their own with a word such as “and”, “but”, or “or” you need a comma before the conjunction.

The following examples may or may not be a comma splice. Take out a separate piece of paper and write numbers 1-5 in the margin If you think the example is a comma splice you should correct it. If it is correct write a “C” next to the corresponding number.
