Tito’s Rule After WWII, Yugoslavia would become a communist country Yugoslavia is led by Josip Tito, who names himself President for life and doesn’t align himself with the Soviet Union Tito’s dictatorship keeps all of the different ethnic groups in check – forcing them to work together as Yugoslavians After Tito’s death ethnic & cultural tensions grow 1991: As communism falls in E. Europe, parts of Yugoslavia begin to declare independence based on ethnicity, language and religion

Serbia & Montenegro would continue to be Yugoslavia War breaks in Slovenia & Croatia as the Serb led Yugoslav army tries to keep the country together, Serbs finally defeated in both 1995: Radovan Karadžić leads Bosnian Serbs against Bosnian Muslims, Serbs begin ethnic cleansing – UN intervenes 1998: Muslims in Yugoslav/Serb province Kosovo want independence To retaliate, Yugoslav leader Slobodan Milosevic begins a ethnic cleansing against Muslims in Kosovo UN & US step in to stop the genocide 1999: Kosovo comes under control of the UN 2006: Serbia & Montenegro split ending Yugoslavia 2008: Kosovo declares independence, Serbia threatens to use force
