1 Napoleon Bonaparte Born in 1769, three weeks after the France took over his island home of Corsica. Father a lawyer who took to french rule quickly. But Napoleon hated France and felt his father betrayed his country. In 1778, at nine years old Napoleon was sent to France for the first time to a special military school called Brienne.

2 When he was 15, a very good student, he was sent to the Royal Military academy and at 16 was made second Lieutenant of artillery unit. Problem was he was not “French” and although one of the best he was not allowed to climb the ranks. When the revolution began, at age, 23 he went home to Corsica and got into politics.

3 In Corsica he began a revolution against the governor of the island. His small force was overpowered, a price was put on his head, and he had to leave his home back to France...

8 Napoleon changes France Napoleon made a new lyscees (public schools), a code of laws (Napoleonic Code), and new systems of taxation. In 1804 he crowned himself Emperor of France

9 Conquering Europe Britain would get other countries to fight Napoleon. A Coalition. But Napoleon beat them and they would sign a peace treaty.

10 Height of Empire By 1812 Napoleon had taken most of Europe. But his rule was unstable.

11 Continental System In 1806 Napoleon made a blockade stopping British ships from coming to Europe. He thought the British would suffer but instead by 1812 it hurt his own empire

12 Invasion of Russia Napoleon blamed Russia for the Continental system not working. In 1812, He took 600,000 troops to invade Russia But the Russians kept retreating, letting the cold kill all but 30,000 of the French troops

14 Napoleon defeated By 1814 Russia, Prussia, and Britain had beat back Napoleon. Napoleon would be imprisoned on Elba, a tiny island

15 The 100 Days In 1815 Napoleon would escape and create a huge army. The joined forces of Europe would meet Napoleon at Waterloo and defeat him.
