CARBON CYCLE AND NITROGEN CYCLE Energy flows in one direction through the ecosystem. Matter is cycled. Carbon Cycle: Movement of Carbon and Oxygen through the biosphere. Two major processes involved: Photosynthesis and Respiration Target: I will be able to explain/diagram how carbon and nitrogen flow through an ecosystem and explain how matter cycles through the ecosystem. Pg. 93

Nitrogen Cycle: The movement of nitrogen through the biosphere. The free nitrogen (N 2 ) in atmosphere cannot be used by living organisms; so it must be converted to another form. Nitrogen fixation: the process of changing free nitrogen in the atmosphere to nitrogen compounds that can be used by living things. Done by nitrifying bacteria Pg. 95
6
Denitrification: the process of breaking down nitrogen compounds into free nitrogen. Returns free nitrogen to the air. Done by denitrifying bacteria.

DIAGRAMING CARBON AND NITROGEN’S JOURNEY On the page next to the corresponding notes, draw the carbon cycle and the nitrogen cycle in detail (Using pictures wherever you can). *Use a minimum of 4 colors OR Imagine that you are carbon and nitrogen. In detail, creatively write about your journey through each cycle. *Use good grammar* Pg. 92, 94
