2. 2 nd Quarter Essay Prompt  Contemporary America has many characteristics of the Romantic era from the 1800’s. Review the characteristics of American Romanticism from that time period. Find an example from contemporary American culture that fits those traits, and reveal how American Romanticism has carried over into today’s society through your example.  Items for consideration:  Famous people  Modern customs and lifestyles  Creations of art or science  Modern events  Modern films or literature

3. Essay Guidelines  Due Friday, December 16 th  4-5 pages (not including works cited)  Times New Roman / 12 pt. font / double-spaced  MLA format  The support for this essay will come from information on whatever example you choose to use/research for your argument, rather than literature from this class.  However, the textbook must be cited as your source for the information on characteristics of American Romanticism from the 1800’s. Those characteristics are discussed on pg. 138-149).  This is a mini research paper; therefore, citing is key to this essay!  You must cite (in-text) all information that does not belong to you (including summarizing and paraphrasing). Use your MLA handout and Purdue Owl Online.

Organization  Essay musts: header (1 st page only), title, page numbers, works cited  Introduction with clear thesis statement.  Thesis must mention American Romanticism, your contemporary example, and how this example reveals American Romanticism OVERALL.  Body Paragraphs  Each needs a new and different main idea that supports your overall argument.  Think of several different reasons why your contemporary example reveals American Romanticism. These will become your main ideas for each body paragraph. They should branch off of that OVERALL point you made in your thesis.  Conclusion  Works Cited  Remember, if you list it on the works cited, it must be cited in the text of your essay somewhere.
