1 See the Seas Media Center Orientation 2010

2 Are you ready for an underwater adventure? Today, you are going to board this submarine and go for a quick tour of the land down under – the ocean. But, before you board the sub, you need to know the rules of the sea.

3 Always treat the books and equipment in the media center with respect. Walk at all times. Speak using quiet voices. Use a shelf marker when looking for books.

4 Books are checked out for two weeks. Magazines can be checked out for three days. Keep books and magazines in a safe place away from little brothers and sisters, water, and pets.

5 Now answer the questions about the rules of the sea as a team. If you get them all correct, you are free to board your sub!

6 This year, we will be traveling all over the world learning about our world under the sea. But first, you need to know where to find information about all that is under the sea! Where would you find a set of books that are in alphabetical order that would give you information about everything under the sea? Go to that area of the media center and find the clue that is on the sea creature there. Write the clue on your paper and then go back to the computer for your next assignment.

7 Good job! Now, where would you find books about animals like this octopus? Go to that area of the media center and write down the clue that is on the sea creature there. Then go back to the computer for the next clue!

8 You’re moving right along! You know, there is a classic fiction book about dolphins called Island of the Blue Dolphins. Where would you find other fiction books? Go to that area of the media center and write down the clue that is on the sea creature there. Then go back to the computer for the next assignment.

9 “Water, water everywhere! Nor any drop to drink.” This is a line from a famous poem called The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. It is the longest major poem by the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The poem is about the events that a mariner, or sailor, experienced after returning from a long sea voyage. Where would you find other famous poems in the media center? Swim on over to that area of the media center and write down the clue that is on the sea creature there. Then go back to the computer for the next assignment.

10 Great job! Did you know that some jellyfish are used in cooking? Where would you go to find cookbooks that might have yummy recipes in them? 11 How many clownfish do you see here? 1 + 1 = 2 ! Where would you find other math books in the media center? Go to that area of the media center and write down the clue that is on the sea creature there. Then go back to the computer for the next assignment.

13 There is a folktale in our media center named Punia and the King of Sharks : a Hawaiian folktale. Where would you find other folktales? Go to that area of the media center and write down the clue that is on the sea creature there. Then go back to the computer for the next assignment.

14 It looks like there are a million fish here! Where would you find the book A Million Fish….More or Less? Go to that area of the media center and write down the clue that is on the sea creature there. Then go back to the computer for the next assignment.

15 Catch me if you can! Fishing is a fun sport! Where would you find other sports books in the media center? Go to that area of the media center and write down the clue that is on the sea creature there. Then go back to the computer for the next assignment.

16 What does this scuba diver see? Coral that has been growing for many years. It has a history. Where would you find books that tell about the history of something? Go to that area of the media center and write down the clue that is on the sea creature there. Then go back to the computer for the next assignment.

17 Now, take all of your clues and fill in the word puzzle. When you are finished, take it to the circulation desk to get checked. Then you are free to check out two books! Way to go!
