10 September 1940-May 1941: The Blitz
For the following nine months, the German air force (Luftwaffe) launched repeated bombing raids on British towns and cities. This was known as the BLITZ and was an attempt to bomb Britain into submission.

12 Battle of Stalingrad The German Army, under Von Paulus attack the city of Stalingrad. The Russians, although outnumbered, defended their city fiercely. The Russian army, under Marshal Zhukov surrounded the Germans Nearly 250,000 Germans died or surrendered.

The German U- boats were a major threat until the cracking of German codes (Enigma) The Germans made a big mistake invading Russia. They could not deal with the harsh weather conditions and the moral of the poorly equipped Russian soldiers

15 D-Day- Operation Overlord
The Allies planned a landing on the coast of Normandy in France They used the coastline’s shallow water, sandy beaches and closeness to England to surprise the Germans General Eisenhower commanded the Allied forces Paratroopers dropped behind enemy lines Warships and landing craft landed American, British and Canadian troops on five beaches (Omaha, Utah, Gold, Juno and Sword) The Allies built PLUTO (Pipeline under the Ocean) to supply oil and Mulberry Harbours (floating artificial piers) in order to land trucks and tanks

18 Why did the Allies win WW2??
They had more people and bigger armies than the Axis Powers American and Russian industries prodiced more than Germany, Japan and Italy. Allied airforces were better than the Luftwaffe, as shown in the Battle of Britain. The Allies produced more oil than the Germans

Jews were surrounded up in concentration camps such as Auschwitz Hitler’s SS organised their mass execution, beginning with the gassing of women, children and older men Others were used as slave labour until they died Some were buried in ass graves and others were burnt in ovens About 6 million Jews were called

Huge destruction to buildings, industries, roads etc The USA and the USSR became the leading superpowers and Europeans lost power At the Yalta Conference Germany was divided into two: East Germany was controlled by the Soviet Union, West Germany was controlled by America, Britain and France European leaders were determined to prevent another war. This eventually led to the creation of the EU
