2 Why Have a Mentoring Program? What should the students gain from a mentoring program? HINT: Make it organic and relevant to the students

3 SCHOOL BACKGROUND Foshay is located in South Central Los Angeles. K-12 span school High school has a population of 725 Wall to Wall Academies- Health, Finance, and Technology

4 ABOUT THE TECH ACADEMY Goal is to relate all that we do to real world experience and opportunities. Exposure to Computer Science following the ICT Software and Systems Development Pathway Projects include: Web Design, Programming, Animation, Video Production, Ad-design, Ethics Presentations, Scratch Students have career course with same teacher for 3 years Career Development through: resumes, Digital Portfolios, mock interview and job shadows.

5 WHAT OUR MENTORING PROGRAM OFFERS Career Skills Constructive/ Real World Critiques Assist with Effective Communication and Networking Skills Assist with Writing: – Resumes – Cover Letters – Press Releases – Digital Portfolio

6 HOW AND WHEN? Mock Interviews Career Panel Q and A Field Trips – require time to meet with students/ review work Guest speakers – require time for Q and A

7 BRING MENTORS ON CAMPUS Resume Review – see resume lesson plan– Digital Portfolio review Research for possible colleges/ internships Practice presentations (they give advice before the big show) Sample Job Interviews Actual Job Interviews WHAT ELSE?....

8 WORK WITH MENTORS VIRTUALLY Create surveys through Google Docs and send out links to projects for feedbackprojects for feedback Create a free Site and link to workSite and link to work

9 WHERE DO WE BEGIN? Exposure to Mentors throughout the program 10 th Grade – 12 th Grade Mentors and Exposure to Business Mentors 11 th Grade – Business Mentors through guest speakers, mock interviews, portfolio review in class, virtual cover letter and resume editing 12 th Grade – Mentor 10 th graders; Portfolio Review at a company; mentoring of ad design project

10 10 th GRADE: 12 th GRADE MENTORS Seniors Meet with Sophomores four times during the year October – Resume Review (before the adult mentors come) November – (Mock) Mock Interview before the real Mock Interview January - Portfolio Set Up April – Portfolio Review

11 10 th GRADE: MEET PROFESSIONAL MENTORS 1.Resume Review in small groups 2.Mock Interviews 3.Career Q and A Panel

12 11 th GRADE Fall Semester: 1. Resume Review 2. Mock Interviews Spring Semester: 1.Collegeboard Research Assignment 2.Job Shadow research. Virtually: Mentors read and edit resumes, cover letters and review portfolios digitally.

13 12th GRADE: Portfolio Review Field Trip The seniors go to an Ad Agency in December AND April December – 45 minute presentation about advertising THEN students break up into 5 groups for Portfolio Review with the Creatives of an Ad Agency

14 12 th Graders CONDUCT INTERVIEWS WITH MENTOR GUIDANCE

15 12 th Grade: Mentors for Projects We do a final ad design campaign – as you saw the mentors helping students conduct interviews for jobs. Next the mentors come in 3 times to watch 2 sample presentations and then the final one at an ad agency where they grade the work.

16 MENTORS TEACH HOW TO WRITE A PRESS RELEASE
