Creation of Superpowers USA emerges from the World Wars as the a global superpower. –USA briefly had the world’s largest Navy –Was briefly the only nuclear power –Had about ½ of world’s industrial capacity –All of the world owed USA’s bankers money –(had become a leading industrial producer by 1890 and continued to grow, while Europe destroyed itself)

USSR USSR had largest army in the world by 1945, much of it in Eastern Europe Battle of Berlin Took efforts to rebuild Japan and Germany as a threat Wanted buffer states- got China sort of to create sizeable Communist bloc Matched USA and allies (Warsaw Pact), encouraged spread of Communism
