1 Bell Ringer – 4/25/2008 Read the paragraphs under “Shaping Public Space” on page 560 1. What gave rise to the City beautiful movement of the early 1900s? 2. What did Daniel Burnham do to the railroad station in Washington D.C.?

2 Muckraking Continues  Many books (besides The Jungle) displayed problems in American jobs & society  “Tweed Days in St. Louis” – a magazine article & one of the first “muckraker” publications. It exposed political corruption in St. Louis

3 Sister Carrie  Sister Carrie was a novel about a young country girl who wants to experience “city dreams”  She struggles to find money many ways: mistress, choral singer, factory worker  The book describes workers brutalized by greedy business owners

4 NY State Tenement Act  Passed in 1901; required that any new tenements be built around open courtyards to allow in light and air  Also, one bathroom was required for each apartment or for every three rooms (instead of 1 or 2 per floor)

5 City Planning  Progressives believed cleaner cities would produce better citizens. They wanted better building codes & sanitation standards  Architect Daniel Burnham led the City Planning Movement – tried to redesign Chicago. He was most successful in beautifying Washington D.C.  Hundreds of playgrounds were built across the U.S.

6 Partner Assignment  With a partner, list 5 things that you believe Chicago could do to improve the “plan of the city”  Explain why each should be improved and the improvements that should be made  Due at the end of class!!
