A PPARC funded project VOTech AstroGrid DSA Update Kona Andrews Institute for Astronomy University of Edinburgh

2 Kona Andrews 05-09-2006VOTech PM4 DSA UPDATE PM3 DSA Plans Family of DSA components DSA/Catalogue DSA/SIAP DSA/STAP (Time, not Table) DSA/SLAP DSA/SkyNode DSA/Catalogue DataMining extensions

3 Kona Andrews 05-09-2006VOTech PM4 DSA UPDATE DSA/SIAP AG SIAP services exist, but implemented in Perl Working on equivalent Java functionality Standardised DB schema for image metadata to support generic component; image DB creation will probably be site-specific Contact: Phil Nicolson

4 Kona Andrews 05-09-2006VOTech PM4 DSA UPDATE DSA/STAP Simple Time Access Protocol (cf SIAP, but for start and end times) Service implemented, working instance(s) sdeployed at MSSL More work on installation packaging Contact: Kevin Benson / Silvia Dalla

5 Kona Andrews 05-09-2006VOTech PM4 DSA UPDATE DSA/SLAP Client functionality exists in AstroScope for finding spectra in pre-existing services AG server-side component still to be developed Can hopefully harness functionality and packaging from STAP Contact: Keith Noddle

6 Kona Andrews 05-09-2006VOTech PM4 DSA UPDATE DSA/SkyNode SkyNode and ADQL undergoing a period of significant revision Have SkyNode client functionality in AG workbench Will not implement server-side functionality until new SkyNode proposal stabilises Contact: Kona Andrews

7 Kona Andrews 05-09-2006VOTech PM4 DSA UPDATE DSA/Catalog: Query model Now supporting schema-compliant ADQL 0.7.4 - 1.0, with validation (and schema bugfixes) Model based on XMLBeans – “no maintenance”, good handles for manipulating queries Region present in beans but presently disabled Committed to XML as an implementation technology

8 Kona Andrews 05-09-2006VOTech PM4 DSA UPDATE DSA/Catalog: DBMS support Built-in XSLT sheets (based on Aurélien’s original) supplied for:  MySQL  PostgreSQL  Microsoft SQLServer  HSQLDB Easy to configure installation to use different XSLT, and to share XSLTs Would like to test against other JDBC-compliant RDBMSs (Oracle, Sybase etc)

9 Kona Andrews 05-09-2006VOTech PM4 DSA UPDATE DSA/Catalog: Auth/Auth Prototype DSA with digital signature checking available Problems with Axis causing authentication issues Contact: Guy Rixon

10 Kona Andrews 05-09-2006VOTech PM4 DSA UPDATE DSA/Catalog: Enhancements Continual improvements to scalability and stability Continual improvements to user interface, error reporting and installation documentation Continual streamlining of software architecture, implementation and packaging Core focus: Producing a robust, generic asynchronous querying engine, with a parallel effort to be responsive to user requests

11 Kona Andrews 05-09-2006VOTech PM4 DSA UPDATE Datamining extensions Working collaboratively with the OGSA-DAI project, with emphasis on : 1. Ingestion of VOTable into RDBMS 2. Migration of tabular data between RDBMSs 3. Distributed queries Large query result support (millions of rows) Further work in DS6, M.Sc. student projects

12 Kona Andrews 05-09-2006VOTech PM4 DSA UPDATE DSA/Catalog: Interesting times Major changes coming for ADQL? (including no XML standard?) Major changes coming for SkyNode? Lots of questions re coordinate systems etc Again, focus on producing a robust, generic asynchronous query engine, and add interfaces / querying standards as they emerge

13 Kona Andrews 05-09-2006VOTech PM4 DSA UPDATE Contact details Kona Andrews: kea@roe.ac.ukkea@roe.ac.uk Keith Noddle: ktn@roe.ac.ukktn@roe.ac.uk Components: http://software.astrogrid.org
