3 Key Terminology  Aqida- The Creed, 6 Articles of Faith  Hadith- Individual sayings of the Prophet  Sunna- Traditions and Practices of the Prophet  Hajj- Annual Pilgrimage  Injil- Revealed book given to Jesus  Islam- Act of accepting belief in the unity of God. Voluntary submission to God  Nabi- A Prophet  Qur’an- The Holy book revealed to Muhammad  Ramadan- Month of Fasting  Rusul- Messengers of God  Salat- 5 Ritual daily Prayers  Shi’a, Sunni, Allawite- Variants of Islam  Sura- Chapter of the Qur’an  Tawhid- Decleration- God is One  Umma- Community

5 Shahada  Public Declaration of Faith  “La Ilaha Il Allah, Muhammad el Rusul Allah”  “ There is no God but The God, Muhammad is the Messenger of God”

6 Salat  Prayer- 5 times  Obligatory- Sane, Mature, free from Menstruation/Childbirth  Dedication of heart/mind/soul to Allah  Rak’a- Bowing. Signifies a unit of prayer  Salat al-Fajr: Morning- 2 rak’at aloud  Salat al-Zuhr- Noon. 4 silent rak’at  Salat al-Asr- Afternoon. 4 silet rak’at  Salat al-Maghrib- Evening- 2 Rak’at aloud, 1 silent  Salat al-Isha- 2 aloud, 2 silent  Friday-Congregational prayer: Noon

8 Zakat  “To Purify”  Compulsory Welfare Contribution  2.5% based on savings, possessions above a threshold  Wealth belongs to Allah  Muslims are trustees of wealth  Qur’an encourages additional voluntary contributions  Often at end of Ramadan

9 Sawm  “Fast”  Month of Ramadan (June/July)  Dawn to Sunset  Food/Smoking/Liquids/Sexual Activity  “The month of Ramadan is that in which was revealed the Quran; a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of the guidance, and the criterion (of right and wrong). And whosoever of you is present, let him fast the month, and whosoever of you is sick or on a journey, a number of other days. Allah desires for you ease; He desires not hardship for you; and that you should complete the period, and that you should magnify Allah for having guided you, and that perhaps you may be thankful”. 10 Hajj  “To set out for a place”  Retrace the steps of the Prophet  “Ihram” (cleanliness)- No cutting of hair, sex, hunting, marriage proposals  White Clothing- Equality, Purity  1- Mecca: Circle Ka’ba (House of Adam) 7 times  2-Walk: Wells of As-Safa and Al-Marwah  3- Mina (5km from Mecca): Prayers and Camp  4- Mt Mercy Near Arafat: Reflective Prayer  5- Muzdalifah: Prayer, collection of pebbles. Thrown at Pillars- Represents Devil  6- Return to Mecca  Visit to Medina- Tomb of the Prophet

11 The Connection  5 Pillars Demonstrate submission to the Will of God- Islam  Shahada- Commitment to Monotheism  Salat- Allah provides life, reflected every day  Zakat- Commitment to the world  Sawm- Devotion to Allah: Overcoming basic needs  Hajj- Coming together to worship Allah

12 The 6 th Pillar- Jihad  Greater Jihad- Living a life to the best of one’s ability  Learning/Engaging in Qur’an  Overcoming Greed, Anger, etc  Social Justice  Forgiveness

13 The 6 th Pillar- Jihad  Lesser Jihad-Confronting evil and wrongdoing  Concept of the Holy War  Disagreement within Muslim community  Sufis- Greater Jihad  Sayyid Qutb- Overthrowing of governments to enforce Sharia Law
