Lesson to be used by EDI-trained teachers only. Learning Objective Name _______________________ Today, we will show common decimal numbers as percents. CFU What are we going to do today? CFU Teacher reads problem #1. Students read problem #2. Students, you already know that place value tells you the value of decimal numbers. Today, we will use our knowledge of the place value of decimal numbers to show them as percents. Read each amount. Activate (or provide) Prior Knowledge onestenthsthousandths hundredths onestenthsthousandths hundredths 1. 2. Seventy-five hundredths Twenty-five hundredths

Lesson to be used by EDI-trained teachers only. Concept Development A percent (%) is a special way of writing fractions with a denominator of 100. The root word “cent” means hundred. Percent means “per hundred” or “out of 100.” “Cent” in everyday words. A century is 100 years. There are 100 cents in a dollar. There are 100 centimeters in a meter. = Example: “25 per hundred” 25% “25 per cent” A decimal number represents a whole number and part of a whole number separated by a decimal point. Numbers can be represented with decimal numbers, words, fractions, and percents. We often think about decimal numbers and percents in terms of parts of a dollar. Example: Equivalent 1 forms of a number. 1 equal in value Decimal number Read as wordsFractionPercent 0.25 Twenty-five hundredths 25% 0.05 Five hundredths 5%5% $0.25 = 25 cents Which of the following fractions means 30%? How do you know? A. B. Uncle John says he will pay you 90% of a dollar each time you walk his dog. How much money will you earn for walking the dog one time? A. $0.09 B. $0.90 C. $9.00 CFU On her birthday, Grandma Velma became a centenarian. How old do you think she is? How do you know? In your own words, what is a percent? A percent is ________. Which fraction represents the same amount as seventy-five hundredths? A. B. Click here to see how I make equivalent forms of a number 100 years old = Parts of a dollar
