What is a theory? “A plausible or scientifically acceptable general principle or body of principles offered to explain phenomena” – Merriam Webster Dictionary Probable and possible explanation to a question in science The Cell Theory exists!!!
3
What is a Cell? Smallest unit of life Makes up all organisms Below are an artist’s depiction of cells.
4
What is the Cell Theory? 3 Main points: All living organisms are composed of cells. Cells are the smallest unit of life. All cells come from pre-existing cells. Believe me, I know what I’m talking about…
5
Order of Makeup of Organisms Small to large: Cells make up tissues Tissues make up organs Organs make organisms
6
Working Together Multicellular organisms have emergent properties: Many cells cannot function on their own Require group work in order to survive This means … ORGANISM!
7
What Defines Life? 1. Order 2. Metabolism – energy processing 3. Reaction – response to environment and conditions 4. Growth and development – aging (life changes) 5. Homeostasis- self maintenance 6. Reproduction 7. Adaption – evolutionary
8
Origin of Life Highly debatable 2 main beliefs: Creationism – God originated Spontaneous Generation – self-production Spontaneous Generation can only have occurred once. When do you think that was?
9
Microscope Usage Magnification = size of image/size of specimen SI Unit Conversions: 1 nm (nanometer) = 1 x 10 -9 m 1ųm (micrometer) = 1 x 10 -6 m 1 mm (millimeter) = 1 x 10 -3 m 1 cm (centimeter) = 1 x 10 -2 m 1m (meter) = 1m 1 km (kilometer) = 1 x 10 3 m
10
Surface Area to Volume Ratio 3 main points: Surface Area increases as Volume increases Surface Area does not increase at the same rate of Volume Cell cannot increase in size continually due to inability to take in enough resources because of lack of surface area to volume
11
Surface Area to Volume Ratio Volume Surface Area Time Size Eventually Surface Area and Volume level out, but at different times.
12
Cell Differentiation Origination of cell determines what function it will carry out Stem cells are cells that have not yet received a function – Embryo Cells are stem cells Differentiation depends on 2 things: Position in relation to other cells Chemical gradients surrounding cells Invaluable to scientific exploration

Questions? Is there anything you are still confused about? Need anything reviewed? Comments?
