Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits16 Drawing Aids
17
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits17 Drawing Aids u AutoCAD provides drawing aids that help prepare the drawing layout, increase speed and efficiency and ensure accuracy. u These drawing aids are: u GRID u SNAP u ORTHO
18
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits18 The GRID
19
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits19 The GRID u A grid u is a predefined spacing of points which is used to help lay out a drawing u The GRID command places this pattern of dots/lines at any desired spacing. u It can be equal or non-equal spacing u The grid pattern shows only within the drawing limits u Entering the GRID command provides a prompt showing the default grid spacing and several other options.
20
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits20 The GRID Command
21
The GRID u GRID u Is a COMMAND and a TOGGLE u Command u Displays a grid pattern in the current viewport. u Toggle u Turns the display of the grid pattern in the current viewport ON or OFF. Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits21

Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits24 GRID Command u GRID can also be set by using the Command: prompt. u More tedious to use than right-clicking GRID on Status Bar. u Command: GRID u Grid spacing (X) or ON/OFF/Snap/Aspect <0.5…): 0.25
25
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits25 GRID Command u GRID on or off: u Click the GRID button on the Status Bar u or u The [F7] function key u or u [Ctrl + [G]
26
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits26 GRID Command – Aspect Option u Aspect Option u Setting a different horizontal/vertical grid spacing can be done. u Type a different X, Y value. u From the Command: prompt u Select the Aspect option of the GRID command.

28
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits28 GRID Command – Aspect Option u Command: GRID u Grid spacing (X) or ON/OFF/Snap/Aspect : A u Horizontal spacing (X) : 1 u Vertical spacing (Y) :.5
29
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits29 The SNAP Command
30
The SNAP u SNAP u Is a COMMAND and a TOGGLE u Command u Restricts cursor movement to specified intervals u Similar to an invisible screen grid. u Toggle u Turns the SNAP action ON or OFF. Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits30
31
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits31 SNAP u The cursor crosshairs move freely on the screen u It may be difficult to accurately place a point u It would be desirable to cause the cursor to move only to an invisible grid. u This is called “SNAP”. u Very useful u Makes drawing much easier and more accurate
32
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits32 SNAP u Snap grid or snap resolution u controls the movement of the cross-hairs to this invisible grid. u It can be set to a different value than the GRID command. u The two commands SNAP and GRID are generally used together.
33
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits33 The SNAP Command
34
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits34 The SNAP Command u Properly setting the Snap Grid can greatly increase your drawing speed. u The SNAP command is used to set the invisible snap grid. SNAP Settings Right-click SNAP button
35
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits35
36
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits36 The SNAP Command u Setting SNAP can also be done at the Command: prompt u Command: SNAP u Snap spacing or ON/OFF/Aspect/Rotate/Style u Pressing [Enter] u accepts the value shown in brackets. u If a different spacing is required, such as 0.25, enter the new value.
37
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits37 The SNAP Command u Command: SNAP u Snap spacing or ON/OFF/Aspect/Rotate/Style : 0.25 u This sets up snap at 0.25
38
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits38 Rotating the SNAP Grid
39
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits39 Rotating the SNAP Grid u The normal snap grid is horizontal rows and vertical columns. u The grid can be rotated using the Rotate option of the SNAP command to a different angle. Command: SNAP Snap spacing or ON/OFF/Aspect/Rotate/Style : R Basepoint :(press [Enter], type a new coordinate value, or pick a new base point. Rotation angle : 25
40

41
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits41 Setting the SNAP Style u The Style option of the SNAP command allows you to set the snap grid to either a u Standard (default) or u Isometric pattern. u Command: SNAP u Snap spacing or ON/OFF/Aspect/Rotate/Style : S u Standard/Isometric S
42
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits 42
43
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits43 Setting Grid Spacing Relative To SNAP Spacing u The visible grid can be set to be the same as the invisible snap grid. u Choose the Snap option of the GRID command.
44
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits44 Setting Grid Spacing Relative To SNAP Spacing u Command: GRID u Grid spacing or ON/OFF/Aspect : 2x u In this case the GRID spacing would be 2x the SNAP setting.
45
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits45 Limits
46
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits46 The AutoCAD Drawing Area u The AutoCAD drawing area is basically INFINITE in all directions. u Think “outer space” u It is beneficial to “define a drawing area” that represents the size of your project. u LIMITS are the extent of the drawing area.
47
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits47 The AutoCAD Drawing Area u LIMITS allow you to define a reasonable drawing area. u This area can be turned u On u Off u You can draw outside the area when LIMITS is turned off.
48
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits48 The AutoCAD Drawing Area u LIMITS u Should correspond to the project maximum size. u For example: a building being drawn in AutoCAD should fit within the drawing limits. u If the Technology building was drawn in AutoCAD, the limits would be at least 300 feet by 50 feet (!)
49
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits49 The AutoCAD Drawing Area u LIMITS u The sheet size on which the project will be plotted must also be considered when determining LIMITS. u For most assignments in the class, we will use a sheet size of 11” x 8.5”. u Set your limits to this value.
50
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits50 Limits u If you wanted a 17” x 11” drawing area, you would set the LIMITS to 17, 11. u The first number is the horizontal dimension. u The second number is the vertical dimension.
51
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits51 Limits u LIMITS can be turned ON or OFF. u To set LIMITS, enter "LIMITS" at the Command: prompt. u AutoCAD restricts you from drawing outside the area defined by the LIMITS when the LIMTS are ON
52
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits52 Limits u If you wanted an 11” x 8.5” drawing area, you would set the LIMITS to 11, 8.5. u The first number is the horizontal dimension (X dimension) u The second number is the vertical dimension (Y dimension)
53
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits53 The “ORTHO” Mode
54
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits54 The ORTHO Mode u The term ORTHO comes from the word “orthogonal”, which means at “at right angles”. u The ORTHO mode restricts the cursor movement to the X, Y plane ONLY.
55
Function Keys, Grid, Snap, Limits55 The ORTHO Mode u Turn ORTHO mode on or off with u The F8 key. u The Cntrl L key combination.
