Oxidation-Reduction Reactions Redox
2
Iron is oxidized when it rusts.
3
What Are Oxidation and Reduction? Oxygen and Redox A Bunsen burner oxidizes the methane in natural gas to carbon dioxide and water.
4
What Are Oxidation and Reduction? Carbon is oxidized when charcoal burns. Carbon is oxidized when charcoal burns.
5
Redox Oxidation is loss of electrons Oxidation is loss of electrons Reduction is the gain of electrons Reduction is the gain of electrons Oxidizing agent is the atom that accepts electrons Reducing agent is the atom that provides electrons The atom that increases in oxidation number is oxidized The atom that decreases in oxidation number is reduced

The substance that loses electrons is called the reducing agent. The substance that loses electrons is called the reducing agent. The substance that accepts electrons is called the oxidizing agent. The substance that accepts electrons is called the oxidizing agent.

Rules for Assigning Oxidation Numbers Quantity Oxidation Number 1. Uncombined Atom 0 2. Monotomic Ion Ionic Charge 3. Hydrogen +1 (except when combined w/ metals~-1) 4. Oxygen -2 (except in peroxides~-1) 5. Algebraic sum of oxidation numbers in a polyatomic ion is equal to the ions charge. 6. Algebraic sum of oxidation numbers in a neutral compound is equal to zero. 7. Oxidation numbers are written for each atom
