2 29-11-03 Higher Education Authority An tÚdarás um Ard-Oideachas HEA Overview of the Socrates Programme Socrates II, the European Community action programme for the cooperation in the field of education, was adopted on 24 January 2000. Spanning the period until the end of 2006, SOCRATES is now open to the participation of the following countries: the 15 Member States of the European Union the three EEA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) the associated countries: Hungary, Romania, the Czech Republic, the Slovak Republic, Poland, Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia Malta, Cyprus and Turkey

3 29-11-03 Chapter on Higher Education (ERASMUS) While the promotion of ‘physical mobility’, mainly of students, is the main objective of Erasmus, it also seeks to integrate such mobility into a wider framework of co-operation activities which aim at developing a “European Dimension” within the entire range of a higher education institution’s academic programmes. Emphasis is consequently placed on teaching staff exchanges, transnational curriculum development and pan-european thematic networks. Higher Education Authority An tÚdarás um Ard-Oideachas HEA

4 29-11-03 Chapter on Higher Education (ERASMUS) ERASMUS provides three different types of support for European activities, as follows; Grants to Institutions for activities within an Erasmus University Charter – EUC (Erasmus Action 1) Mobility Grants (Erasmus Action 2) Thematic Network Projects Higher Education Authority An tÚdarás um Ard-Oideachas HEA

5 29-11-03 Grants to Institutions for activities within the EUC Each institution’s application for Community support includes its policy statement on European cooperation (EPS). Intensive Programmes (IP) -bringing together students and staff from several countries to obtain new perspectives on a specific theme Joint development of university programmes at initial or advanced level (CD) - at least three institutions from different countries pool their resources to develop a programme of study, a module or a curriculum. 6 29-11-03 Thematic Networks Thematic Network Projects aim at examining the European dimension within a given discipline or to address other cross- disciplinary of administrative issues. Funding may be provided to faciliate departments or faculties of higher education institutions, research centres or professional associations to form a European network around a subject area or specific topic as a platform for analysis and discussion. 7 29-11-03 Socrates-Erasmus Student Mobility Grants Objectives to enable students to benefit linguistically, culturally and educationally from the experience of other European countries and of their academic fields of study to enrich the educational environment of the host institution to promote co-operation between institutions which exchange students to contribute to the enrichment of society in general by developing a pool of well-qualified, open-minded and internationally experienced young people as future professionals to contribute to the costs of mobility and to enable students to spend a study period abroad Higher Education Authority An tÚdarás um Ard-Oideachas HEA

9 29-11-03 Socrates-Erasmus Student Mobility Grants Specific Criteria Students in first year of study are not eligible Students must be fully registered on a course leading to a qualification offered by an institution which is recognised as eligible for ERASMUS Students must be nationals of the participating countries or nationals of other countries provided that they are permanent residents or have status of refugee or stateless person The sending institution must undertake formally and in advance to grant full recognition of the study period abroad towards the home degree/diploma Higher Education Authority An tÚdarás um Ard-Oideachas HEA

10 29-11-03 Socrates-Erasmus Student Mobility Grants Specific Criteria Exchanges of students are based on inter- institution (bi-lateral) agreements The period of study undertaken at the partner institution is between 3 months and 12 months A student may only participate as an Erasmus student once No institution fees to be paid at the host institution Payment in full of State Grants is maintained Higher Education Authority An tÚdarás um Ard-Oideachas HEA

12 29-11-03 Socrates-Erasmus Teaching Staff Mobility Grants Objectives to provide teaching staff with opportunities for professional and personal development to encourage institutions to broaden and enrich the range and content of courses they offer to allow students who are not able to participate in a mobility scheme, to benefit from the knowledge and expertise of academic staff from institutions in other European countries to consolidate links between institutions in different countries to promote exchange of expertise and experience on pedagogical methods Higher Education Authority An tÚdarás um Ard-Oideachas HEA

13 29-11-03 Socrates-Erasmus Teaching Staff Mobility Grants Specific Criteria the partner institutions and the individual teachers must have agreed in advance on the programme of lectures to be delivered Exchanges of teachers are based on inter- institution (bi-lateral) agreements Teaching assignments will normally have a duration of one week or a minimum of 8 lecture hours and may last up to 6 months Priority should be given to mobility which: lead to the production of new teaching material Higher Education Authority An tÚdarás um Ard-Oideachas HEA
