1 EDUCATION FOR THE POOR Summer English Program

2 About Us  Non-Profit Organization – granted 501(c)  Established in 2005  Not a student-run club at UCI Natalie Xuan Van Mission: Assisting the underprivileged in Vietnam escape the cycle of poverty through educational training and providing various resources in hopes of improving their quality of life.

3 Purpose of the Summer Program Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

4 Who are we looking for?  Dedicated volunteers  As an English Instructor  You will have your own class of students pre-assigned to you  Your focus will be on pronunciation, conversation and speaking, so knowing how to speak English very well is a must  At least 18 years old  No Vietnamese skills required

5 When is the Program?  Training dates/Meetings  Before the start of the program  TBD  Program is 5 weeks (or 6 weeks)  June 21, 2010 until July 23, 2010  Daily Schedule  Teaching in Class Mon –Fri  Each volunteer has 2 classes, 8-10:30am and 2-4:30pm  Weekends are free, some local trips/touring are planned for your enjoyment

6 What does volunteering entail?  Students are placed in 3 levels based on English proficiency  Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced  # of students  Range from 20-60 students/class  2 classes per volunteer  Books/Audio CDs are provided to guide teaching  Being able to write lesson plans and do more than just teaching from the book

7 Where are we volunteering?  Hue, Vietnam  Vinh, Vietnam  You will need your passport!

8 Costs/Accommodations  The only thing that you have to take care of is your airplane ticket  $650 - $1350  Personal Expenses  Souvenirs, other foods/café, calling home, going out  Dependent on each person ~$200  What is provided?  3 meals a day, provided everyday (unless you choose otherwise)  Living arrangements are made in advance for all volunteers to ensure their safety and comfort

9 How do I apply?  In Sign-in Sheet, write your name and email address (UCI account preferably) – Please write legibly  You will be sent an application to complete and send back to us  Depending on the number of applicants, you will be selected for an interview and know the results soon after  Applications are due Friday, Jan 8 th 2010  You can submit EARLIER though (recommended)
