Tone Tone is a literary compound of composition, which encompasses the attitudes toward the subject and toward the audience implied in a literary work. Tone may be formal, informal, intimate, solemn, somber, playful, serious, ironic, condescending, or many other possible attitudes. Today we will be focusing on Formal vs Informal
6
Formal: ProfessionalInformal: Casual Avoid using colloquial words/expressions (substitute with children, man/boy, wonderful, many, etc.) Avoid contractions (write out full words – cannot, will not, should not, etc.). Write in third person Formal: Avoid clichés (use many, was absent, etc.) Avoid addressing readers using second person pronouns (use one, one’s, the reader, the reader’s, etc.) Avoid using abbreviated words (use full versions – like photograph, television, etc.) Longer and more complex sentences are preferred (short simple sentences reflects poorly on the writer) May use colloquial words/expressions ( kids, guy, awesome, a lot, etc.). May use contractions ( can’t, won’t, shouldn’t, etc.). May use first, second, or third person. May address readers using second person pronouns ( you, your, etc) May use abbreviated words ( photo, TV, etc) May use short and simple sentences. Formal vs Informal

What’s Wrong?? When writing a term paper, the one thing you’ve got to remember is to use authoritative sources. These are vital if the paper is to persuade the intended audience. Reliable sources can be found everywhere from the library down the street to the internet. Internet sources must be used cautiously, since some sites are just run by wackos; nonetheless, some sites do provide quality information. Once the writer has found her sources, she must remember to cite them properly in order to avoid plagiarism. Plagiarism is bad. Citation styles vary across the disciplines, but they can usually be figured out with a proper style manual.

Remain Consistent! When you write or speak, it is important to be consistent in your style and tone. The style and tone in writing and speaking needs to match the purpose for writing or speaking. For example, you should use a casual style and tone if you are writing an e-mail to a friend. You should use a more formal style and tone if you are writing a report for your social studies assignment. Style refers to the way you put your writing together. It refers to your choice of sentence patterns, your overall choice of words, and the specific vocabulary you use. Tone refers to how you say or write something. You might choose a serious tone for a serious topic and a humorous tone for a funny story.
10
How to Maintain Consistency? To maintain a consistent style and tone, be sure that you say what you mean. The more you know about what you are writing or speaking about, the more precise your message will be. The style and tone should match your purpose for communicating and should be consistent throughout the message. Avoid these common mistakes that interfere with maintaining a consistent style and tone…
