Future of AD is clearer and deserves investment New AEGIS experiment being prepared, requires new control room Existing ACE experiment desperately needs a control room Severe lack of space inside hall 193, no storage space available so far Visits were prohibited due to safety issues Radiation level needs to be integrated in general hall occupation policy Numerous problems linked with existing experiments control rooms (see next slide)
3
The radiation level reaches 17 Sv/h on one gangway and up to 8 Sv/h at permanent workplace Permanent occupation of a controlled area does not conform with ALARA rule Users eat and drink in control rooms in radiation controlled area (no cafeteria) Serious potential risk in case of fire, being made of plywood No natural light, breaks the French work code R 235-2 Noise in the barracks was measured up to is 71 dBA (norm is 50 dBA ) The barracks are constantly flown over by objects suspended from the crane, in particular liquid He dewars, weighing over 300 kg. The roof of the barrack is 1cm of plywood only! Lack of space for users, no decent meeting facility. The air conditioning systems are obsolete, noisy and rather inefficient. Their replacement was quoted at 30 kCHF. Very good case for work inspectors who could easily prohibit exploitation of AD !

SAFETY: 1. Assess performance of all safety systems: end 2010 2. Solve all main points of the safety inspection report: March 2011 3. Find alternatives to crane handling of liq He dewars VISITS: 1. Create conditions so that visits can restart, in a temporary mode: 1 st September 2010 2. Prepare conditions for long term visits (improved itinerary, new emergency exit): Proposal end 2010, operational mid 2011 STORAGE: 1. Find long term storage space in an existing building: 1 st July 2010… oups ! 2. Propose new short/medium term storage hall: proposal end 2010, operational end 2011 CONTROL ROOMS: 1. Build a new control room for AEGIS/ACE, and new toilets: Proposal September2010, operational early 2011 2. Build new control rooms for all experiments, with cafeteria and meeting room EXPERIMENTAL AREAS INTEGRATION: 1. Suppress gangway over AEGIS, redistribute circulation: Proposal end Sept 2010, operational March 2011 2. Propose a new EA layout, new space for racks, integrate ELENA: Proposal end 2010, operational mid 2012 ?

New Control Rooms barely visible from anywhere: between 193, cooling towers and bank… Future pedestrian access door Difficult to be closer to the hall entrance !

Nice and green environment…

Technical aspects are sound (safety, CE, HVAC, power distrib, networks) Technical Note submitted to EN management Will be presented to site committee in November Phasing considered: 1. January 2011: AEGIS/ACE CR+ toilets + tech room) 2. Later: Other CR’s + meeting room + cafeteria Need green light from management… Next: storage hall… but MUST find intermediate solution (bldg 133 ???)
