FINDING VOLUME OF REGULAR SHAPES Prepared and presented by Mellisa Robinson
2
VOLUME Used in finding the amount of space an object takes up takes up The object must be three dimensional Must know the measurement of the length, height and width height and width
3
FINDING THE VOLUME OF A PRISM Rectangular Prism A prism is a solid object that has two identical ends and all flat sides. The cross section is the same all along its length.
4
9m 7m 5m Volume = area of base x height OR Volume = length x width x height (lwh) Length = 9m Width = 5m Height = 7m Volume = 9m x 5m x 7m = 315m 3 N.B. (m) x (m) x (m) = m 3 FORMULA FOR FINDING THE VOLUME OF A RECTANGULAR PRISM
5
FORMULA FOR FINDING THE VOLUME OF A TRIANGULAR PRISM Area of Base = ½ Base x Height1 Volume = Area of Base x Height2 Volume = ½ Base x Height1 x Height2 Base = 4m Height1 = 6m Height2 = 10m 6m 4m 10m Volume = ½ (4m) x (6m) x (10m) = 240m 3
6
FORMULA FOR FINDING THE VOLUME OF CIRCULAR PRISM Area of Base = r 2 Volume = (r) x (r) x height ( r 2 h) r = 5m h = 10m Area of Base = 3.14 x 5m x 5m Volume = 3.14 x 5m x 5m x 10m = 250m 3 = pi = 3.14
