18. Heir n. Anyone who acquires property upon someone’s death which is based upon the rules of descent and distribution. It can refer to anyone who receives something from a will, but usually refers to the child, descendant, or other close relative of the deceased. An heir cannot be identified until the person leaving the property dies because the heir apparent may pass away first. Upon adoption, a legally adopted child gains the right to be an heir as if he/she were the natural child of the adoptive parent or parents and is referred to as an adoptive heir.
