SOCRATES PROGRAMME OnLineMath&Sciences Project October 2005 – September 2007
2
Project OnLineMath&SciencesSOCRATES PROGRAMME Objectives Development of on-line learning environment and courses in mathematics and sciences based on demonstrations, simulations and problem-solving, and development of tools for distant group- work for university engineering education. Development of new methods and tools for alternative assessment of student performance and achievements, and adaptation of the learning environment to the individual learning styles. Training teachers for student centred coaching, development and use of eLearning materials and the on-line services for student support; and students for independent and activity-oriented learning. Setting up comparative analyses for improving the understanding of learning processes and experiences in using information and communication technologies.
3
Project OnLineMath&SciencesSOCRATES PROGRAMME Expected Outputs Report on the need analysis; eLearning environment OnLineMath&Science with training modules on mathematics, physics and chemistry; Innovative testing system, based on problem solving in mathematics, physics and chemistry; Support system of advisors/coaches and study and tutor guides; Reports on the findings of the pedagogical research, comparative analysis.
4
Project OnLineMath&SciencesSOCRATES PROGRAMME Report on the need analysis Description and specification of the eLearning platform, evaluation system and training modules planning to satisfy the specific needs of each organisation. Languages: BG, FR, EN Deadline: December 2005 Responsible: TUS Involved: all

Project OnLineMath&SciencesSOCRATES PROGRAMME OnLineMath&Science with training modules on mathematics, physics and chemistry OnLineMath&Science with Communication tools: Development of the environment and the tools for communication as forum, file sharing, June 2006 Adaptation of the environment to the specific needs of the user organisations, September 2006 Training of developers of courses, April 2006 Learning materials in mathematics, physics and chemistry Independent modules available for adaptation into the specific curriculum of each partner university, June 2006.
7
Project OnLineMath&SciencesSOCRATES PROGRAMME OnLineMath&Science self-learning room in which course modules for stand-alone learning mode; group-working room providing possibilities for collaborative learning with communication tools “forum” and file sharing; library including downloadable electronics guides, course- books, movies; simulation and project design virtual laboratory; information desk including students enrolment facilities, courses information and schedules.
8
Project OnLineMath&SciencesSOCRATES PROGRAMME Innovative testing system, based on problem solving in mathematics, physics and chemistry Re-design and adaptation of the evaluation system (ForEva) for the purposes of university education, June 2006 Design and validation of tests for student assessment specific for the needs of each country/university, December 2006 Languages: BG, FR, EN Responsible: UP Involved: all
9
Project OnLineMath&SciencesSOCRATES PROGRAMME Support system of advisors/coaches, study guides and tutor guides “Local” tutoring in each institution in the two modes: face- to-face and Internet communication. Training seminars for the tutors and electronic and paper- based guides will be developed. Languages: BG, FR, EN Deadline: November 2006 Responsible: ULB, TUS, UCTM, UNED Involved: all
10
Project OnLineMath&SciencesSOCRATES PROGRAMME Reports on the findings of the pedagogical research, comparative analysis The experiment will be performed during the pilot test and the field trials. Pilot test : September-December 2006, small groups of students form TUS, UCTM, ULB. Field trial : January-August 2007, larger groups of students from TUS, UCTM, ULB, USTL and UP. Languages: ES, BG, FR, EN Responsible: UNED (TUS will help) Involved: all
11
Project OnLineMath&SciencesSOCRATES PROGRAMME Pilot tests Two samples of students working on the same content, one – learning on the Web-based modules and performing tasks on projects and the other - with traditional lecturing and laboratory practice methods. By the end of the experiment the mean score and frequency distribution of the marks on both, knowledge test and performance on project development will be compared. The information on the attitudes and perceptions of the students working with the Internet-based modules will be collected with interviews/discussions, questionnaire and records of communication files from the Java Communication tool during the pilot experiment.
